Having read Old House in the Shires post on her top 5 picture books for young children and her call out for anyone to do the same. I thought I'd share with you my top 5 picture books here.

My Top 5 Picture Books for Young Children.

A Mouse's Diary

My Top 5 Picture Books for Young Children.

1) As a child I grew up reading A Mouses Diary by Michelle Cartlidge. I think this book is now out of print but it remains my no:1 favourite with it's simple text and delightful drawings. It is one book my girls wont be getting their hands on till they are a lot older.

The Jolly Postman Books

My Top 5 Picture Books for Young Children.

2) My mother was a fan of Janet & Allan Ahlberg so I got read many of their books as a child. My favourites have to be the Jolly Postman books with all the interesting finds in the letters.

Dear Santa

My Top 5 Picture Books for Young Children.

3) I was also read Dear Zoo as a child and can recall days at toddler group playing with animal figurines and triangles that slotted together. When I noticed that there was a sequel I added it to my daughters' collection.

That's not my .... Books

My Top 5 Picture Books for Young Children.

4) Talking of my daughters' it's hard to escape the That's not my .... books. I love penguins so this is my favourite one of the series.

Zog

My Top 5 Picture Books for Young Children.

5) Also difficult to escape from (but then why would you want to?) is the delightful duo Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.  My favourite book of this series is Zog as despite many an accident he is lovable and it's got a female hero too.

  3. Lovely, lovely post and thank you for carrying on the tag!
I love The Jolly Postman series; such a clever idea. I don’t know the Mouse Diary but how lovely that you read a special book from your childhood with your children! I am in love with reading and love sharing books with children. They so love books and I have never met a child in 20 years of teaching who doesn’t want to share a book with an adult. The other books are such sweet choices for tinies too. Xx
