For lots of children, starting school can sound like a nerve wracking process but help is at hand with books. Over the past year I have collected a number of books about going to school for the very first time and I have even picked up a pack of story telling cards on the subject. In this post I thought I'd let you know which ones I have.
I am absolutely too small for school
First up I have got a copy of I am absolutely too small for school. This delightful book reflects on how Lola doesn't feel she is ready for school and comes up with lots of reasons why she can't possibly attend. Her brother however helps to turn her thoughts around by telling her all the reasons why she would benefit from it. From writing letters and learning numbers to 100. The images and wording are used throughout this book to appeal to young children. Can Charlie convince his sister that school is a great place to attend?Amelia Bedelia's First Day of School
The next book I have on the girls bookshelves is Amelia Bedelia's First Day of School. I find this rather an Americanized book at times with it's terminology. It will appeal to little ones due to the fact that it is really silly. She often misinterpretates the teacher which leads to some interesting scenarios. It ends with a really sweet message that even teachers have first days at school too.School Bus Trip
Of course my girls love Peppa Pig and so I can't leave the book School Bus Trip out. It follows Peppa on a day trip out with her class mates and shows what they get up to when they visit the mountains.Hugless Douglas Goes to Little School
Hugless Douglas Goes to Little School is rather a sweet little book. It reflects on the things that go on at school but also includes hugs too.
Starting School
Finally I grew up reading Janet and Allan Ahlberg books so as soon as I saw that they'd written a book entitled Starting School for little ones I knew I had to get it. It is written in a bigger print so young readers can easily read it while pictures are spread amongst the text. There is also repetition in that the childrens' names are repeated throughout the book. It also shows what children get up to when they attend.Overall I believe I have discovered some lovely books that will help children (including mine) think about school. Already my eldest can't wait to get stuck in.
If you feel I'm missing any out do let me know in the comments below.

Aww! What a great selection of books....I remember having the Topsy and Tim book for when my girls started school and that got them through. #MMBC
ReplyDeleteLovely collection of books and a great way to ease her into the idea of school. I remember my eldest having a favourite one about a rabbit starting school. She was convinced she could read every word. #MMBC
