We've reached the end of the #ABC123Challenge hosted by Karen of Two Tiny Hands here. So you've guessed it it's the turn of z to shine. Of course we had to go with a theme that lots of children are familiar with i.e. the zoo.
My children love a lift the flap book and we found that the perfect book to go alongside this theme is Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell. Familiar with young ones far and wide and a classic spanning back till 1982.
I gave this book to my eldest with a number of animal figurines and she came up with a spontaneous game of matching them up as she recited back to me almost word to word perfect the story. Think Chinese Whispers almost for we've not started reading properly yet.
You could team this theme up with visiting the zoo. We thoroughly loved Cerza Zoo in France. With all the animals they had to view and so many close encounters with such wonderful animals whom we share our world with.
Have you read any great children's books about animals you've found in the zoo? Perhaps you've discovered some great activities or even visited the zoo. Whatever your experiences we'd love to hear them.

Zoo sounds like a perfect subject for books and activities. Who doesn't love animals? #MMBC

ReplyDeleteI love visiting the zoo wherever we go! I don't think we ever get too old to appreciate the creatures!
ReplyDeletehehehe! Z had to be Zoo didn't it.
ReplyDeleteI can remember Dear Zoo from when I was little and my girls loved the book too! #MMBC
What a great way to end, although I can't think of many things ending in Z. I'd have probably gone for Zebra (we have two in our family!) I love taking my kids to the zoo. I hated it when I was young though, it seemed all the animals were caged and penned in when they should be in the wild, but with the wild under danger I now see zoos as safe havens to keep these animals from becoming extinct. Most zoos do a really good job these days and you can see they look after their animals well. I love the book too, I can remember reading that to my kids when they were little.

Dear Zoo has been a firm favourite with our kids for years. Dublin Zoo is my favourite - fabulous space. Thanks for sharing with the #DreamTeam this week
ReplyDeleteI have written before about my mixed feelings towards zoos. I love the conservation work that they do and the opportunity they give to show the beauty of nature but I am sad to see animals in captivity. Thanks for linking up with #globalblogging
