As soon as the sun came out we decided to get out into the garden and have had some fun. We've been creating makes in line with the alphabet challenge, losing balls over our fence (really how can one little person throw so high?!) and growing some food.
I'm unsure whether all the food will survive and we will be eating what we are awarded especially as eldest is quite keen on digging presently! We shall have to wait and see what happens.
Hubby decided that the cress would go into egg and cress sandwiches. My youngest usually loves to try and eat everything. However, on this occasion she removed it from the sandwich and decorated the table with it instead! Eldest who is a little fussier loved it and even asked for more. They certainly do surprise you don't they?

Learning How to Sew Seeds
Meanwhile we have planted some cress that was quick at growing and already we are feasting on what we've grown. Growing cress takes me way back to primary school days where I have a vague memory of growing cress from what looked like an island and pretended to be birds looking from above and taking a bit of cress to try.
Waiting for the Vegetables to Grow
So when hubby declared we would try to grow our own vegetables and asked me what I would like to try. Cress was high up on my list to grow with the kids and produced quick results so even the most impatient child would not have to wait long to try some.
The Cress Grew Well
As you can see from the photo. The cress grew well and the girls have learnt that just a few things like sun, seeds and watering can get great results. These results can then go in to your tummy so that you too can grow. Something that my eldest has come to realise and currently obsess about a little. For I've heard her say on more than one occasion the words 'Sister making me grow' being said by her as her sister does indeed offer what she has in her hand. I can recall a certain incident where eldest thought her little sister would like to try baked beans so maybe youngest is getting her own back.

ReplyDeleteThis is such a great project to do together. Getting our garden in shape for the summer is definitely on the top of my to do list, but my hayfever is so bad this year. Maybe some light indoor gardening to start us of for now. #coolmumclub

ReplyDeleteI love getting out and gardening with the kids, although they're not so interested in the greenhouse now they're teenagers. Mint and Tomatoes are my go to along with a few other herbs. It's great to see the girls enjoying their gardening with you, it's such a great way to teach them about science. It's great they're enjoying eating the cress too, a reward for such hard work!

ReplyDeletecress is amazing because it grows so quick. We have grown it in egg shells and drawn faces on them so the cress becomes the hair. The kids are not so keen as eating it though.

Sounds like a great idea. We are growing things but nothing that gives such quick results so I may have to go and get some. That reminds me though we haven't been watering them! oops!

ReplyDeleteCress is such fun to grow with kids as it grows so easily and quickly. I try and make the effort to grow vegetables each year - last year we grew radishes and lettuce and although the girls weren't so keen on eating the produce, they did enjoy seeing things grow. Glad your girls have been enjoying growing cress and even better that your eldest enjoyed eating it too!#countrykids
