This week the letter in the #ABC123Challenge hosted by Karen of Two Tiny Hands is I. We decided to try out ice painting for the very first time and this is how we got on.
To Paint with Ice You Will Need:
- Craft Sticks
- An Ice Tray
- Water to be turned into ice cubes
- Paint
Now for the Fun Part
Start by making ice cubes and part way through the freezing process stick in some craft sticks so each of the cubes can act as mini paint brushes when they are solid. We set these over night and in the morning we set out the ice paint brushes and paints ready to be played with.
We tried water colours with these ice cubes but I am sure there are lots of other ways in which to paint with ice. As you can see from the photo below this turned out quite well with blue and orange being quite successful at showing up.
Two things didn't go quite to plan. The first was that after telling my eldest not to try eating the paintbrush she did and secondly the paint from the craft sticks ended up running into the ice cubes. Letting them touch the ice cube and tell you whether they find it hot or cold is a great point of discussion and could lead to talking about climate and animal habitats. However, we just stuck to asking what she was feeling by touching the ice cube and she told us that it was cold because it had been in the freezer.
So there you have it our very first attempt at ice painting. Have you ever tried painting with ice?

We haven't tried this yet as my little one puts everything in her mouth. I was thinking of freezing some plastic toddler spoons in the cubes to use as handles. Maybe we can finally give it a try!

ReplyDeleteOOOhhh painting with ice sounds like a brilliant activity to try. It's not something we have ever done before. I'm wondering what would happen if the ice was coloured with paint or food colouring as some point in the freezing process. Something to put on the list to try this Easter holiday!
