C is for Colour

What would the world be without all the beautiful colours in it? I could imagine it would be rather boring and just like the black and white screens of days gone long ago. So it's been a wonderful delight to witness the colours springing up around us and one colour that's particularly prominent at the moment has been red with Valentines Day which is also the good luck colour to Chinese New Year. As we roll into spring there's a whole rainbow of colours that brighten the day and gone are the dark days of winter once more.

 Colour Sorting

I'm keen for my girls to learn their colours before they head off to school, So I've been looking into ways of reinforcing what the colours surrounding them are. It seems to boil down to a guessing game of matching coloured objects to the colour name at present sadly. However, eldest is very good at matching the colours and sorting them appropriately. She even can count them as she goes.

Painting With Colours

Another activity which is always met with enthusiasm from my eldest is painting. Last year we decided to get outdoors and have some fun fingerprinting in the garden on an old canvas we had to hand. I asked her what colours she wanted to use as we went in the hopes that the words to the colours would be absorbed.

Chalk Drawing

We also had fun with chalk and as I created a rainbow from the colours we had present. Eldest had fun mark making and learning.

Colour Hunt

Of course the whole world is full of colour. Why not ask what colours the child can find in nature while out and about. You could also print out a scavenger hunt printable featuring the colours for easy reference or carry with you a bunch of coloured ribbon. Finally, why not practice your colours in an Easter egg hunt or crafts.

What do you think are colours and their associated colour name something children need to know before they head to school?

  1. I'm nit the right person to ask about what children 'need' to know before starting school. Penguin is very much atypical, learning a few things very early but most things much later than expected. While I was extremely early with almost all academic learning as a child (which isn't always a good thing).
I really like the ideas for colour activities in this post, and am pinning it for later 🙂👍x #GlobalBlogging

  8. one of our favourite things do do with the kids is get out our huge tub of chalk and draw pictures on the concrete or on our fence. You are right colour is pretty awesome, it would be sad to never see the green hills, and bright flowers. Thanks for joining me for #mg

  12. These are lovely colour activities and the perfect way to inject some fun into learning. I think knowing their colours is expected for nursery/school and doing it in a fun way can really help to get them remembering everything. Thanks for sharing with the #DreamTeam x

  15. These are lovely ideas to encourage colour recognition. We used to play 'I Spy' with colours instead of the alphabet when we were out and about, before my son was old enough to recognise letter sounds. I think children would generally know their colours before starting nursery, depending on the age they start - but I think it's all about having fun, playing and just talking and being relaxed with them. These games and activities are ideal. I wouldn't sweat what they do and don't know, just keep doing what you're doing and it will come naturally. x #bloggerpinparty
