Karen from Two Tiny Hands has decided to challenge people to the #ABC123Challenge. I do like to teach my daughters and have fun with arts and crafts in the process. Having fun makes learning easier and we start at the very beginning of the alphabet this week with the letter 'a'.
There are a number of projects we could have undertaken beginning with the letter 'a' but in this house my thoughts turned to 'astronomy'.
The first activity I have to share with you is very simple. Just take a piece of black paper or card a cookie cutter in the shape of a star and some yellow paint. Apply the yellow paint to the cookie cutter and place it down on the paper. Repeat the process so you have a starry sky. This would make a great homemade wrapping paper. Don't worry if the star smudges a bit you could always pass it off as a shooting star.
Our thoughts then turned to how we view stars in the night sky. We may spy them by our eye but then there's a telescope and binoculars that lead to seeing them a little closer (unless they are pretend of course). So we got two toilet paper tubes coloured them in with crayon and bound them together with coloured glitter tape.
I'm certain that there are many more activities you can do with astronomy in mind. My Star Wars bunting I created last year for one. You could also take a walk under the night sky and try spotting the moon and stars like we've done.
You could also team these activities with books such as these by Oliver Jeffers.

ReplyDeleteI love the How to catch a star book, but I hadn't heard of The way back home! I love your idea to pass it off as a shooting star that makes perfect sense and adds to the fun. The Star Wars one is great too, my eldest may be a bit old to make it although she loves art and crafts so maybe she would as she is totally Star Wars obsessed, she recently had a friend over and they watched as many episodes as the could until 2 am when I said that's it go to bed! ReplyDeleteGreat ideas. My two love making loo roll binoculars and the number of times I’ve been caught short when it comes to wrapping paper is rediculous. I usually end up wrapping it in plain white A4 then getting the kids to draw all over it or add stickers, I love the idea of using cookie cutters as stamps.
