Come Eat With Me

When you think of France what do you think of? Perhaps it's sunshine, the rustic buildings, the language or even the food. Maybe it's a mixture of these or something else entirely. For us I think the food is a dominant factor and one we love to embrace especially as Grandpere is a very good chef.

Foraging

While the more adventurous amongst us may be keen to go foraging and find mushrooms to add to the pot. We spotted the snail above while out at Château Harcourt and when our French relations saw this photo they told us we should have taken him home to lunch on! Obviously not all snails and mushrooms are edible so you do have to be careful. Frogs legs and snails aren't as popular with the French as some people would have us believe. Hubby did snack on some frogs legs while we were at a Chinese restaurant abroad but he didn't realise what he had tucked into at first.

Of course there are lots of yummy fruits to be picked during the summer months heading into the autumnal ones. Apples, plums, blackberries and raspberries are all ready and awaiting being picked if the animals and insects haven't got to them first of course.

Markets

The markets are another fantastic place to find local fresh produce. In the past we have been known to take a chicken home to cook with its head newly detached and a baguette. While the meal tasted delicious I can truly understand after that experience why some may be put off eating chicken for life. The market near our family happens once a week on a Saturday.

Supermarket

Of course if you don't fancy eating out, foraging or attending the local market there's always the supermarket. Unlike the shops you find over here these are only open at certain times there's no 24 hour shopping in France. Set up around spending time with the family you have to think about when you are going. We were a little disappointed by the quality of the fruit and veg this time and the grapes were extortionate in price. We love our fresh milk too unlike the rest of our family who seemed happy to have what could be described as uht milk so we spent quite a bit of time stopping by for a new carton of milk. My eldest was also surprised to see crab up close. She's only ever seen crabs in an aquarium before so this was new for her and she was completely absorbed. Sadly on our last visit there were none in the tank so we told her they'd gone on holiday.

Have you ever found yourself shielding your child from the truth so as not to upset them? Have you got experience of eating something unique abroad? As always I'd love to hear from you so do leave a message below

  1. I've never been to France, but I've always associated it with great food. Someday...although I'll avoid the frogs and the snails, thank you! ;0

  4. When I think of France I think of muscles, and escargot, and steak frites and kir royale. I think of Ile Flotante and creme brulee. I love the food I eat in France. I am not really a food person but just thinking about French food now is making me salivate. Pen x #mg

  5. Maybe. Jane knows Peppa Pig is made of pork so I guess probably not. Our eldest in very into the truth so he wants to know what things really are a lot of the time. We love France, but it's usually only the adult s and Jane who get to try proper french food. #dreamteam

  7. I'd like to think of myself as reasonably adventurous when it comes to food, although I'm not sure I could stomach snails or frogs legs if I'm honest.

  11. Never shielded the children from food sources. They know that one of the lambs in the field opposite will end up in our freezer. My best friend was french, so I think I've tried all of the above except frogs legs. My french friend's father was the most amazing cook. When my eldest went on a french trip she did try them and was not phased. #MMBC

  12. I definitely would not have known what sort of snail was edible! I've eaten snails before, but I didn't catch them myself, I don't know if that's a bit too squeamish for me! #BigPinkLink

  15. Hi Helena, eating is one of the joys of being on holiday, don't you find? I'm not sure I could go as far as eating snails, but I think I could give frogs legs ago, they can't be that much different from octopus or squid and I really enjoy that. In South Africa I did eat ostrich steak, which was very similar to beef but a little gamey.... I must have told the children little white lies, but I think children handle the truth far better than we think they can... Except for Father Christmas & the tooth fairy, to this day they are real!

Thank you for sharing your culinary experience and for linking up with the #MMBC.

  16. I try to be honest with my kids, the youngest is too young to understand but eldest seems to understand where her food comes from. I do love a good market x

  17. I long to travel in Europe and the UK and experience as much as I can and share it with my children. My children have never been to another country. I have thought of trying snail before, there is a very beautiful French Restaurant in Melbourne where my husband and I went and had lots of delicious food, but I decided not to try snail. I do love mushroom though. #mg

  18. France is just amazing for food! The pastries are just out of this world. I would love to forage for mushrooms but I'm too scared of poisoning everyone! Thanks for linking up with the #bigpinklink this week.
