The Girls Nature Books

Inspired by the activities we have been up to lately in the garden and beyond. I've been taking a look at my girls' bookcase and considering which books they have that are in keeping with them and could help cement their love of nature further.


Above is a list of books that appear on their bookcase in keeping with the theme of nature. Now on to my discoveries...

What the Ladybird Heard 



Since the arrival of our girls it wasn't long before I was acquainted with the work of Julia Donaldson. What the Ladybird Heard was perhaps my introduction to her literary works.  Last month we created colourful lady bugs that could be made alongside reading this wonderful book. 

The Gruffalo



There's also a number of her other books that could fit the theme of nature. The Gruffalo being one of those that easily springs to mind. Regular readers of my blog may recall that we visited the Westonbirt Arboretum earlier this year and took part in their wonderful trail.

Two other books written by the talented Julia Donaldson in keeping with the theme nature are The Scarecrows Wedding and The Snail and the Whale. 

Each Peach Pear Plum and The Hungry Caterpillar



Of course we've also been up ladders removing the plums from the trees. If you are looking for a delightful couple of books reflective of this activity then may I suggest Each Peach Pear Plum and The Hungry Caterpillar as two books that feature them. 


Looking at the list above of books we have it's clear that we have many more activities to explore. We have yet to plant beans although we've grown fruit and vegetables in our garden.

    Jasper's Beanstalk is a huge favourite here and I've often used it for bean planting activities. It's also a great book to use to make a story sack :)

    My boys loved the hungry caterpillar book! That one is a classic and both of my boys loved going outside and discovering different planets and tiny critters running around. They are less so now that they are older but I still manage to convince them to go hiking with me sometimes and we talk about the wonders and beauty of the natural world around us:) #mg

    What a lovely post and some real classic children's books. You've got me thinking now! My kids do a lot of sport. I'm not sure if we've read many books relevant to that.

    You can never start that love of nature too early, these are beautiful books. My Dad was a conservationist and I grew up going on bat searches in the evening and looking after any number of random injured animals. I wouldn't have swapped it for the world X #MG

    This is such a cute idea, I love the idea of using literacy to encourage getting the kids outdoors! Will remember this for Ben, but right now all he might care for his Peppa Pigs muddy puddles haha!

    There are some books on here I hadn't heard about. I'm going to look them up! Recently we went to the Banstead Nature Reserve where they have some wooden carvings inspired by "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe". I loved that I'd read the book to my 5yo and it came alive for him. #thesatsesh

    Love the Hungry caterpillar. Children's books are a great way to incorporate their activities. Some of the things we like to do are paint/color, gardening, and some baking. Then we read a book that depict it and my daughters are even more interested in the activity!
